Medical History Interest Group Lecture on Monday September 25

Join Dr. Maura S. McAuliffe, founding program director of East Carolina University’s Nurse Anesthesia program, as she provides an overview of the history of nurse anesthesia. The lecture will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, September 25, 2017 at the Evelyn Fike Laupus Gallery on the 4th Floor of Laupus Library.

Nurse anesthetists have been providing anesthesia care in the United States since at least the American Civil War. They are the oldest nurse specialty group in the United States and the primary anesthesia providers to the U.S. military.

Dr. McAuliffe has served as the Nurse Anesthesia Program Director for 15 years. Prior to that, she was an active duty USAF Nurse Anesthetist for 20 years and was Program Director for the TriService Nurse Anesthesia Program at the Uniformed Services University. She earned a BS in Nurse Anesthesia from George Washington University, a MS in Nurse Anesthesiology from Virginia Commonwealth University, a MS in Nursing from the University of Texas San Antonio, and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Texas at Austin.
