Laupus to celebrate newly digitized collections

Laupus Library will celebrate the new online discoverability of archival collections during an opening reception planned for April 29 from 2-4 p.m. in the Evelyn Fike Laupus 4th floor gallery.

The newly digitized collection of over 200 items is now accessible worldwide, following collaboration with Joyner Library staff who received a Library Services and Technology Act grant to improve accessibility to the collections at Laupus and The Country Doctor Museum.

During the reception, guests will be able to view exhibited artifacts, photographs and manuscripts from Laupus and the Country Doctor Museum that showcase the development of medicine and explore the history of country doctors from eastern North Carolina beginning in the mid-19th Century.  A Civil War-era amputation kit, a ledger with non-monetary payments, handwritten botanical medicine recipes, a homeopathic chest and more will be available for viewing.

Finding aids for all of the archival collections will be offered on laptops and iPads provided at the opening reception. The exhibit will remain up through June 10.

This grant was made possible through funding from the federal Institute of Museum of Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
