Dr. Gloria Graham Wins 2015 North Carolina Doctor of the Year

Gloria Flippin Graham, MD, recently won the North Carolina’s Doctor of the Year Award from the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS).  The NCMS started this program as a way for individuals to honor physicians who are passionate about their patients, experts in treatment care and make a positive impact in the life of their community.

Dr. Graham’s efforts to help establish The Country Doctor Museum in Bailey, NC, is one of her many contributions to the state of North Carolina. As a founding member of the museum, Dr. Graham worked to collect a historically significant collection of materials used in the practice of rural physicians. Founded in 1967, The Country Doctor Museum is the oldest museum in the United States dedicated to the history of America’s rural health care. The Country Doctor Museum is now part of the Laupus Health Sciences Library History Program and continues its mission to share the contributions and history of country doctors.

Born in Durham, North Carolina, Dr. Graham grew up in Pilot Mountain, NC, where her father, Dr. James Meigs Flippin, practiced as a country doctor until he was well into his 90s. He inspired her to complete her undergraduate and medical degree at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. She specializes in the field of dermatology and has served on the faculty at UNC, Duke and Wake Forest University. Dr. Graham is a Dermatologist at Eastern Dermatology and Pathology in Morehead City, N.C., and has over 54 years of practicing medicine under her belt.

In a recent interview with the NCMS, Dr. Graham said she has no plans to retire. She states the physician’s relationship with the patient is what “makes you far richer” in life.  Dr. Graham’s passion for her profession, her patients and her community is clearly appreciated by her patients and those who know her.
