Friends Film Series to host “Surviving Year One”

The second film in a new educational series hosted by the Friends of Laupus Library will be screened on Oct. 24 at noon in the library’s fourth floor gallery. All East Carolina University students, staff and faculty are invited to watch “Surviving Year One,” part of the “America by the Numbers” film series that reveals how dramatic demographic changes are playing out in our country today.

According to the film, the U.S. spends more on health care than any other nation, with the biggest portion going toward pregnancy and childbirth. Despite this, infant mortality rates in the U.S. are dropping at a significant rate. In “Surviving Year One,” the film takes viewers to Rochester, New York, where babies are dying at a rate two times higher than the national average and where mothers of color are three times more likely than white mothers to lose their babies before their first birthday. In the search for answers, learn about programs that are working to reverse these dramatic disparities.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
