The Pitt County Historical Society and the Medical History Interest Group invite you to attend Dr. Walter J. Pories’ talk, “My Memories of the Holocaust,” on Monday, April 4, 2022, from 4:30-5:45, in the Evelyn Fike Laupus Gallery, Laupus Library, fourth floor.

Dr. Pories’ presentation, part of the Ruth and John Moskop History of Medicine Lecture Series, is free and open to the public. In addition to the in-person presentation, there will be a Zoom broadcast for those preferring to attend virtually.

The Speaker and Topic:

Dr. Walter J. Pories is a professor of surgery, biochemistry, and kinesiology at Brody School of Medicine. He joined the ECU faculty in 1977 as founding chair of the Department of Surgery and soon distinguished himself as a pioneer in the development of bariatric surgery. Dr. Pories was the first to document that the gastric bypass procedure he developed produces rapid, full, and durable remission of Type 2 diabetes. Earlier, in 1955, he joined in the U. S. Air Force as a surgeon, and then later the U. S. Army Reserves, serving his country a total of 24 years as a medical officer before retiring at the rank of colonel with a Legion of Merit Award and a Presidential Citation. A Holocaust survivor, Pories fled Germany as a young man, age 11, with his family in 1939. His talk will present his memories and reflections on his early life in Germany and then America.
