The event was held at The Martinsborough at the Jefferson Blount Harvey Building and was sponsored by the Friends of Laupus Library.

“It is a pleasure to once again recognize the rich contributions to the health sciences literature by our Health Sciences Division authors,” Laupus Library Director Beth Ketterman said. “Our authors’ publications this year add to the knowledgebase in their fields and run the gamut in subject matter from grasp and handwriting ability, to quality of life in patients with lung cancer, to periodontal disease in adults in North Carolina.

The author recognition event is the one time of the year when all our faculty authors from across the disciplines can come together for a celebration of their work, and the library is proud to host the party.”

This year, 136 authors published a total of 543 qualified peer-reviewed publications including 345 journal articles, 155 creative works and 33 book chapters between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019. Ten books were also published by 10 authors.

Authors from the Brody School of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Allied Health Sciences, Laupus Library, School of Dental Medicine and the College of Health and Human Performance were recognized by name and school or college in a printed program given to all attendees.

Chair of the Friends of Laupus Library Dr. John Papalas presented book authors with a Laupus Bronze medallion cast to commemorate the life of William E. Laupus, the first dean of the School of Medicine and first vice chancellor for health sciences at ECU. The medallion is awarded to acknowledge and thank special friends whose generosity and support helped build the library’s collections and programs and make its services more readily available to the citizens of North Carolina.

“It is an honor to both represent Laupus Library and to help recognize and celebrate the faculty who have authored these important books,” Papalas said.

This year’s special remarks were given by Dr. Greg Kearney, associate professor in Brody’s Department of Public Health. Kearney was also recognized as one of this year’s published book authors for his publication “Environmental Public Health: The Practitioner’s Guide.”

“I have become highly dependent on the valuable services, resources and support provided by Laupus Library to assist me with my teaching and research needs,” Kearney said. “For more than eight years, Laupus Library has provided me with the tools needed to be highly productive in publishing my research. From helping me with systematic reviews, to finding hard-to-reach journal articles, to poster printing, Laupus Library has become my absolute ‘go-to’ resource for research for myself and my students.”
