Introducing Those Who Feed Us: a Webinar Series Exploring Migrant Farmworkers, Health Disparities, and Digital Inclusion for Better Health
The series will introduce attendees to the many issues facing migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the United States.
The Laupus Health Sciences Library Diversity Committee, NC Farmworker Health Program, ECU College of Health and Human Performance, Student Action with Farmworkers, and the NC State Agromedicine Extension present: “Those who Feed Us: Migrant Farmworkers, Health Disparities, and Digital Inclusion for Better Health”
Many people don’t know about farmworkers’ vital contribution to our economy and to our food systems. Because of the conditions they work in, they often experience higher rates of health disparities related to everything from pesticide exposure and heat stroke/stress to incidences of diabetes, food insecurity, and many more.
This webinar series will focus on the work of our grant project and other successful projects to address health disparities by providing access to internet and other information sources. Especially in the time of the pandemic, digital inclusion has become vitally important for us all in providing telehealth and education.

Film Screening and Discussion: “Where does our food come from?”
October 27, 2021 at 10:30am – 12pm (On-campus location: Laupus 1506)
A screening of the film Harvest of Dignity will be followed by a discussion with Student Action with Farmworkers staff and interns. The discussion will be moderated by Eve Portillo, NLM grant G08LM013198 advisory panel member and governing board member of the NC Farmworker Health Program.
Harvest of Dignity features stories about farmworker families and their struggles. Independent producer Donna Campbell interviewed farmworkers, attorneys, health workers, ministers and advocates who explained the conditions in farmworker housing and working conditions.
Panel discussion: “Digital Equity and why Digital Inclusion affects Health Outcomes”
November 3, 2021 at 10:30am – 12pm (On-campus location: Laupus 1504)
The panel discussion will focus on digital equity and inclusion and how this affects delivery of healthcare for migrant and seasonal farmworkers.
Panelists will include: Dr. Amy Sheon, President of Public Health Innovators, LLC and Research Director of the national Telehealth Equity Coalition; Rosa Miranda, Surry Medical Ministries; and Jessica Rodriguez, Vecinos: Farmworker Health Program. The panel will be moderated by Paula Acevedo, undergraduate research assistant on the National Library of Medicine grant G08LM013198.
