Preserving a Legacy: Welcoming Carol Quigless to the History Collections

The Laupus Library History Collections recently had the privilege of welcoming Carol Quigless, daughter of Dr. Milton D. Quigless Sr., for a special visit to explore her father’s archival collection and reflect on his enduring legacy.

Dr. Quigless was a pioneering physician who dedicated his career to providing medical care to the Tarboro community. Throughout his decades of service, he cared for generations of patients while also mentoring future healthcare professionals and advocating for greater access to medical care. His contributions continue to be recognized today, most recently with the dedication of a North Carolina Highway Historical Marker honoring his life and work in March 2026.

During her visit, Carol viewed photographs, documents, and artifacts that tell the story of her father’s remarkable career. While archival materials preserve the historical record, hearing personal memories from family members adds another layer of understanding that cannot be found in the documents alone. Her stories provided valuable context for the collection and highlighted the lasting impact Dr. Quigless had on his patients, colleagues, and community.

A “Casual Conversation” with Carol Quigless

To ensure these stories were documented, Dr. Eric Bailey recorded a casual conversation with Carol, giving her the opportunity to reflect on her father’s life, career, and the significance of seeing his legacy preserved in the History Collections. The conversation captured memories and family perspectives that complement the archival record, providing a deeper understanding of Dr. Quigless beyond his professional accomplishments.

The visit also offered an opportunity to discuss the continued growth of the Dr. Milton D. Quigless Sr. Collection. Carol has generously entrusted the History Collections with preserving her father’s papers and memorabilia, ensuring that future students, researchers, and visitors can learn from his life and contributions to medicine. Donations like these not only preserve individual legacies but also strengthen our understanding of the history of healthcare in eastern North Carolina.

One of the most rewarding aspects of archival work is connecting with the people behind the collections. We are grateful to Carol for sharing her family’s history with us and for the trust she has placed in the Laupus Library History Collections.
